Presentation of the teams: http://www.virom.net/partic.htm

All three towns has in its close surroundings unique archaeological sites with the remains under the ground.

Sweden

Staffanstorp – UPPÅKRA

100 B.C. - 1000 A.D.

Poland

Wolin - JOMSBURG

900 -1100 A.D.

Italy

Ozzano dell'Emilia – CLATERNA

500 B.C. - 200 A.D.

Which means that their are possibilities for contacts/influences between Uppåkra/Claterna at the start of the first millennium AD and between Uppåkra/Jomsburg at the end of the first millennium AD.

Overall assessment

Initial objectives
The main point with the project is to make the involved pupils and the public aware of their historical heritage in focus of the unique archaeological site close to them.

Achievements
Not only the pupils, but also the schools and teachers has become aware of the unique archaeological site close to them.
Involving local artists in the project gave the project a better status. It was not only something done inside the schools, it was something done in the open society.
It has really stimulated the people in the different towns to think  about their historical heritage and to promote their unique archaeological site

Through the project, its work and its activities, both participants and the public, will get an increased awareness, knowledge and understanding for both their own and other participating countries historical heritage.

Finishing the project with a travelling exhibition was really good. It stimulated to do something extra because it should be shown to the public in different countries. It also gave the project an European dimension; youths from the north, east and south of Europe met, planned and did one, no really three, exhibitions together.

At that moment - the visitors got an increased awareness, knowledge and understanding for both their own and the other participating countries historical heritage.

What results are anticipated on a long-term basis?

  • An increased interest for the historical heritage.

  • A better knowledge about the local history.

  • A better knowledge about historical co-operation, influence and exchange between Europeans.

The project has stimulated the planning in the municipalities for further investigations and visualisation of the historical heritage in focus of the history of the three unique archaeological sites.

It has also stimulated to a closer co-operation in the terms of culture tourism.

Who will benefit from the project?
After the project is finished, there will be possibilities for continuous co-operation and exchange of knowledge, for professionals, schools and the public, and not only in the participating towns and countries. The Web-site will, with its accessibility and possibility to be up-graded, spread knowledge about the archaeological sites and the historical heritage but also establish new contacts and create networks in this field over Europe. This interest and awareness which the project creates for each of the archaeological sites, will hopefully also increase the economical support for research and science at the site and an increase of culture-tourism.

The VIROM-site is going to be published on the Webb for so long time there indicates an interest for it.

It has for the moment a top ranking on Google.

There will still be possibilities to use the collected materials in other coming applications in this field.

The project in short

The project started with information about the archaeological and historical heritage on each site given to the pupils and teachers in the involved classes.

The same basic information is published on the common WEB-site of the project; www.virom.net.

The results of the pupils own work were discussed at seminars with the archaeological experts. The results from the pupils searching of information are published on the WEB-site.

The pupils "Education and searching information"-phase of the project has created pictures in their minds, which they express through drawings and paintings. Some of those illustrations, from the three different towns, are presented in a virtual gallery at the common WEB-site.

The information and the results on the WEB-site did also inspire invited local artists in the three towns to shape their illustrations through drawings and paintings. Those work of art are also presented in a virtual gallery at the common WEB-site, and as a part of the touring exhibition.

The travelling exhibition was the final part of the project. The participating countries formed their own part of the exhibition, and the three parts were be put together and formed the travelling exhibition. The exhibition was formed out of pupils drawings & paintings, replicas of archaeological finds and most of the artists works. together with information about the project and the three archaeological sites. Involved pupils and teachers accompanied the exhibition and gave presentations and speeches at each place. Speeches given by archaeologists completed the information about the historical heritage and contact between Europeans.

The exhibition was formed out of drawings and paintings, work of arts, some archaeological finds, and information about the project and the three archaeological sites. Some pupils represented their town and accompanied the exhibition and gave presentations and speeches at each place. The exhibition was open to the public, and stayed at each of the three places for about a week.

Publishing:
The creating of a common WEB-site was an important part of the project. The information about the project and the three places were presented to the public here, and also the results of the pupils searching information, and the virtual gallery from the illustrating phase.

It was also planned that the pupils should be able to exchange information here during the project. A chat-room was created but did not became a success. Mostly depending on the lack of synchronising in time and also troubles with fire-walls.

The main purpose of this WEB-site is to make information about the project and the three places available to as many people as possible.

All information and all results are sent to Sweden, where the project-manager and the WEB-editor formed the site.

Hopefully, the awareness created by this site, can inspire to a further economic support to the activities necessary to make a part of these heritages in different ways available to the public, and to keep science going, seeking for more answers.

Detailed report of the implementation of the project
The creating of the common WEB-site was really an important part of the project. Here below, is it possible to follow the different steps of the project and the corresponding information and documentation that was published on the WEB-site. This in total forms a detailed report of the implementation of the project

Searching information
The pupils now formed their own questions about their archaeological site, their historical heritage and so on, in order to add supplementary details, important out of their point of view. They searched actively the answers in different sources.

Claterna - Archaeological documentation and catalogue of ancient finds
In Ozzano dell'Emilia the experts of the archaeological associations carried out a research work in the archives and libraries, taking photographs and making digital scanning of the documents, and a cataloguing work, in order to reconstruct, for the pupils and the teachers, the history of Claterna and its inhabitants and the possible connections with the North Europe archaeological sites of Uppåkra and Jomsborg.
